Weecology is founded on the belief that better communication and collaboration between empirical and quantitative scientists is necessary for tackling many of the big scientific challenges in ecology. Weecology was created by the Ernest Lab (a more field-oriented group) and the White Lab (a more quantitatively oriented group) as a mechanism for facilitating research integrating empirical and quantitative approaches and for training the next generation of scientists (our students) to work collaboratively. The purpose of weecology is to facilitate collaborative research – both within weecology and between weecology members and other scientists – through a variety of mechanisms including shared resources, expertise, and web-based collaborative tools. Our hope is to teach students (and ourselves) to collaborate and communicate across disciplinary divides and generate higher-quality novel research as a result.
